Done !

Yes, my sock is finished!!! only one, and the other one has to wait until I knitted the boys socks. I started with the biggest pair, no fancy patterns please was the request. Oh, well, I made it into a fancy rib pattern. (boring..........................) T on the other hand saw a pattern that I had with skulls on it, so that is going to be the next pair , if I can find out how many stitches to cast on. It also has matching mittens and a hat. And he wants a hat of course.

The question is, "how fast can you make me one, mom?"

We are counting down the hours for new year, T wants to stay awake and toast with us. Last time he begged to go to bed, he was so tired.
This is my last blog for this year, see you next year!!

My sock is growing, the heel is done, and now I am going for the toe. Next project, sock number two (ha, to keep both my feet warm) And now this, T has home work to do, beside his book report and his current event report and two art projects, there is this.
It is a short history of the Celebration of Christmas around the world. One of them is Holland.
Well, I grew up there and never have seen a Zwarte Piet or "black Peter" like this one!
And that is not all, according to the story that goes with this, Dutch people say " Zalig Kerstfeest" when they see Sinterklaas.....................?
this is only the mistake they made for Holland, In south Africa they say according to GERMAN traditions "salig kersfees" introduced by Queen Victoria ????????? HUH, did I miss something at my history lessons?
No need to say, some corrections will accompany this homework.

The coloring in this work is great, regarding that T is totally not into any art whatsoever.

Knitting and Grandma's

Knitting away tonight, two more sections and then I can start the heel.
I love knitting socks, little needles and the more work in the sock the better.
The same goes for hats, and I already am planning my next project.
I remember my Grandmother "oma Knalhutte" knitting socks, everybody got socks.
Always the same pattern and the same color.
simple, and straight, and the heel and toes knitted with double yarn for extra strength.
Last year my Aunt and Uncle, send me a pair that where never worn. Oma died when T was only three, and that pair of socks I save for him, as a legacy from his Great grandmother who he only met twice but still talks about.
I also started the holiday mini album this week, fun to do and while I still have some pic's to print, it is going to be finished before the end of the year. (that's my plan anyway)
We had a surprise phone call this morning, Agnes called all the way from Chili. It was so much fun talking to her and hearing all of her stories.
She is traveling all by herself though Chili and Argentina and doing some volunteer work. Very brave and adventurous, so far she is having fun and getting adjusted to the lifestyle.
Now back to my socks, my feet are getting cold!!!!!!!!

This is our guest for these two weeks, Niner. He is very gentle and a very good guest. Usually he lives at school and in the weekends with the teacher, in the fourth grade Gate class. But because the teacher went on a little Trip this week and none of the parents volunteered to have Niner come over, he usually ends up here. I love rats, they are very intelligent and very lovable. We had two Driekus and Frederik. Driek lived up to the very old rat age of almost 4 years old. He died on Halloween night last year and if he had made it until Dec 7th that year he would have been 4. We got him when he was just 8 weeks old, and one of his brothers also became a classroom rat. That is how we got into "rat sitting" over the holidays.

It is very windy today, we went to the park to play soccer for a while but it was to windy. So we went home, made some hot cocoa and are just hanging out. I am going to put some socks on my knitting needles in a moment, anouther hat just finished. Maybe I'll post some pics of my soks in progress later.

almost Christmas

it is vacation time, T is happy to be home and hang out with us. playing games and watching TV. He and I drove over to trader Joe and got some bubbly blueberry juice and pirates booty, YUM.
And now the waiting game is on, what is Santa going to drop under our Christmas tree this year?

knitting stix

While working on the last batch of cards to send out, T walks in and asks if he can have some knitting sticks.
He wants to learn how to knit, can you teach me Mom??
Of course, so we sit down and to my surprise he quickly picks up and after one row he insists he does it all by himself.
It is going to be a scarf, so he can wear it to school after the Holidays. And "if I practice a lot, than I can knit faster than you mom, and then I will make scarves and socks and hats"
Wow, well first let's see how long this scarf is going to be.
And for the next half hour we work side by side, sharing a little small talk, until it is time to go to bed.

lucky and Happy Feet

look what came today, a surprise I won from Making Memories!!! and I never ever win something. Wow, it totally made my day.

T and I went to see Happy Feet today, If you haven't seen this movie it is the best!!! It even made me cry. And the music is so good, and all those dancing penguins, amazing how they think about the story and make those movies. And we saw some previeuws of the new Harry Potter movie, we can not wait to see that one.

OK back to the holiday card rush.

Oh, the weather outside is fright full

It has been more than a week from my last post, Sorry, but it has been a very busy week.
I am making the last of my X-mas cards and they go out by the end of the week! This weekend we were at the winery, and with the rain it made for huge mud puddles. The boys were playing in them and every night I go home we have to hose of Tycho in the garage and take straight to the shower. What is better for boys than play in the mud and get very (and it is VERY) dirty? On Saturday the boys decided to make a "clubhouse" and when it was done the two oldest boys sat inside while Kev, the youngest one decided to paint the outside. Bright idea, he got hold of a bucket of roofing tar. No need to tell you he was really, really, really dirty!

Some of the cards I made so far, I am very busy knitting too, everybody wants one of those hats i knitted, one parent from school asked me if I could knit her doggy a sweater! HA, isn't that funny?

doggies in the park

went to the park this afternoon, and came across these two.
ahhhh, dogs I love them, their names, little and patches.

Cold outside

Finally it is cold outside, and I love it! It is nice an nippy in the morning, sun shining and I can see my own breath.
So nice to wear a sweater, have my knitting and curl up in front of the fireplace (if it actually would burn it would be even nicer) TV on my favorite channel and I knit the evening away.
Oh, and do not ask me what I was watching because I was counting stitches so, the TV is just there for the background noise.
And when I actually take a break it is on commercial..... oh, well.
For some reason the blog does not let me upload pictures, I'll try again later.
Something happened yesterday that blew me away, got me totally by surprise and I still can not believe people can do those things.
I was at school and of course volunteer sometimes, this time I opened car doors at the "drive through" to get the kids save out the car.
Here comes this mom, I open the backseat door, her kid jumps out and in the process knocks over the baby in the car seat. Baby was buckled in the car seat but the car seat was not buckled in the car.
The car seat and baby roll over, on the side, and it was a tiny baby, maybe a couple of weeks old.
While the mom puts up the car seat reaching from the front seat, I ask if she wants me to strap in the seat.
Her reply, "oh, no it is fine this way"
OK, huh......................... she asks me to close the door, and of she goes turning the corner.
I wonder what is she THINKING.
Maybe we need a police officer outside and open car doors, Ha!

Look what came in the mail today, a sinterklaas/Christmas package from the Netherlands!
My aunt and Uncle are soo sweet.
Guess what we are having for dinner tomorrow?? Bami, we love it, and besides from kroketten it is a thing I crave sometimes.
Tycho is very happy with his Lego racer and with the Stroopwafels.
The first thing we opened where the salmiak lollies, looooooooooooove those. and the salmiakballen too.
We are so lucky nobody here likes those, so we do not have to share.
Friends already know we love those "spitt balls", and are happy to pass on that treat.
But Hagelslag everybody loves around here, last year I took some to school and made the kids beschuit met hagelslag. They are still asking about it!

One of T's news articles, he only wrote the headlines we are still waiting for the stories.
It is officially holiday season out here, our neighbor is busy stringing the lights outside and driving around town I saw a lot more reindeer, Santa's and candy canes that all can be plugged in at night. Well I could not be the last to put up some decoration, so I plugged in my little tree in my office.
So cute, and honest, every girl needs a pink tree!! Now I need to come up with a x-mas card to send out to everybody, How about pink and some bling????

Happy Thanksgiving !

Happy Thanksgiving! We are relaxing at home today, watching TV and playing computer games.
we did some gardening yesterday, we replanted a tree, and planted the tulip-bulbs.
the last one was T's job, so it will be a surprise in spring where the tulips will show in our garden. One thing is the soil here, there is no way, when it is wet and you just dug a hole in it you are going to walk trough it with your shoes without being re-soled with a clump of dirt.
I just had to take a pic of J's shoes when he walked back to the tree to see if it was planted right.
Tycho is writing newspaper articles, he is so funny, he is interviewing us. I so love when he does those kind of things. It makes me smile and happy.
More about his articles later today!

almost Thanksgiving

It was a fun day today, we had a thanksgiving performance at school. Every kid had to choose a person from the Mayflower and had to do research on them.
so we present you with Isaac Allerton, aka Tycho.
and then there is this little girl I met today, Isn't she cute??
guess what I am wishing for from Santa this year..........................................(hint, hint)

Fall day

I took these pictures today, the boots from the girls are so funny, look closely at how they wear them, must be not so comfy! (ha) Love those boots, I wish they came in that color in my size!
And the barn is so typical American for me, this one is not far from us and every time I love to look at it when I drive by. Today I stopped and took this picture.
It is getting close to thanksgiving, turkeys are piled high in the groceries stores. Every year
when the birds are arriving in the stores I have to think about the song from Yoep van 't Hek, "Flappie" about a bunny that ends up on the Christmas table.

Here is the Turkey version on the song, I do not know who wrote it, but it is soooooo funny.

"Come Late in November"

When I was a young Turkey, new to the coop,

My big brother Tom took me out on the stoop,

Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow,

And he told me there was something that I just had to know.

His look and his tone I will always remember,

When he told me of horrors.............come late in November;

"Come about August, now listen to me,

Each day you'll get six meals instead of just three,

'And soon you'll be thick, where once you were thin,

And you'll grow a big rubbery thing on your chin.."

"And then one morning, when you're warm in your bed,

the farm wife comes in and hacks off your head!"

"Then she'll pluck out your feathers so you're all bald 'n pink,

And scoop out your innerds right there in the sink!"

"and then comes the worst part" he said.......... "I'm not bluffing,

She'll spread your cheeks wide n' pack your rear with stuffing!"

Well, the rest of his words.... were too grim to repeat,

I sat on the stoop.... like a winged piece of meat,

And I decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked,

I'm gonna lay low to remain overlooked!

I began a new diet... of nuts and granola,

High-roughage salads, carrot juice..... diet cola,

I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half,

And act like I'm sick..... when the bigger birds laughed;

And as they ate pastries, chocolate, and crepes,

I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes;

For 'twas I who was laughing, under my breath,

As they chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death;

sure enough when,...... late November rolled around,

I was the last turkey, left walking around......

So now I'm a pet..... in the farmer's wife's lap,

I haven't a worry.... so I eat..... and I nap.....

She holds me all day, while sewing an humming.....

Ans smiles at me, ands says: "Christmas is coming..."

Rain, scarves and friends

We went to Carmel Valley on Friday, the weather was perfect, and Tycho fell asleep in the car.
As soon as I turned off the engine, he awakes and asks " Hey we are not home, where are we?"
We walked around, and took some pictures, so I can see where to put the bride and groom in the op coming wedding I have to do there.
We came upon this friendly kitty, with a big belly.
Tycho asked if the cat was pregnant, so Jill asked the lady behind the desk.
Her reply "Well honey we can not all be a size five!" (she was not a size five herself if you feel where this is going).
We just did not got her on a good and friendly day.

Saturday and Sunday we had the boutique at the winery. Saturday started of with pouring rain.
It was cold and wet, but I love these events, every year we meet old and new vendors and we grow a friendship. We spend two days visiting, sharing our stories what happened with our families and friends during the time we did not see each other.
Sunday it was Sunny and warm, lucky for me because I had an outdoor photo shoot.
Ha, and the fun part I sold some of my knitted scarves. I had knitted a couple just for fun, and low and behold there are people who really liked them and snatched them up. At the end of Sunday afternoon I had only two left.
So of to the knitting needles for me because there are more to sell in December. HO HO HO

Wednesday, the middle of the week, two more days and it is weekend.
It rained today and finally it was a little colder!
I so want it to be colder, and wear thick sweaters instead of t-shirts and shorts.
I am getting ready for the photo shoots that are upcoming, it is as always crazy just before the holidays.
My first shoot is already done, and in two weeks I have a wedding to do. I love doing weddings, love to capture all the emotions on people's faces.
Of to do more work, more tomorrow.

I knit

OK, I know, I am a nerd but I love knitting. Made this little hat over the weekend, I was not sure about the colors but these I had at hand. When it was finally finished late (very late) on Saturday night, Jan tried it, and I could not help but laughing, it looks funny!
I do not give in that easy so I tried it on, it fits but I don't like myself with a hat on.
Today I wanted some pics for Christmas cards, and Tycho tried it on, well judge for yourself, like it or not, maybe I knit another one, with not so out there colors or just tone on tone colors.
Anyway, the pictured turned out really nice!, now what to choose for my cards???

Far away party

My Cousin got married today, sorry I could not be there. But I bet You guys had a wonderful day! My sister send me this picture, so we could see how the happy faces from the bride and groom. I know we will get the update from the party tomorrow.

What a fun night Halloween is, we had friends over for dinner, and although the kids could not wait to go out to "trick our treat" they all ate very good.
Finally it was time to go, I am always amazed at the amount of candy they come home with.
In our house it usually ends up in the "Candy-bin" and waits until I have to throw it out.
After the kids came home the big candy trade started, and wonder above all, they did not fight over the best candy.
The tough part is getting up the next morning and going to school and work again after such a special night.
Now it is up to Thanksgiving and then it is time for the Christmas trees.
I saw a too cut pink tree, wouldn't that be nice for my office. It already makes me happy thinking about it!!! yeah

Working on some more Christmas cards this afternoon, I am trying to make some cards next with not Christmas colors. Bleu-wie is chattering away, so nice.

off to work now, more cards to make.

OK, something went wrong last night with my post, Don't know exactly what happened but only the title is in my blog.
To busy working on my San Diego album I guess.
We went to SD somewhere in the beginning of summer and had a blast, of course I took a ton of pictures and finally I got around to scrap them.
It is so much fun to see them back after a while.

now I have to gear up to go and carve some pumpkins, too bad they only last for a couple of days.

San Diego

In the beginning of Summer we visited San Diego.
Loved it, it is so beautiful there!

Of course I came back with a ton of pictures, that begged to be scrapped, so this afternoon I finally had time to scrap them, or at least make a beginning with it. So here it is, the beginning of the SD album.

And in between I just had to make a Christmas card, I am still working on what kind of card to send this year!

Thursday, October 26, 2006

We had to write a bookreport for school today, not me, but Tycho of course.
He read the book, made the pre- write and then the first draft.
Then we have to correct the mistakes, and try to decipher what he has written down.
Sometimes he doesn't even know.
But we have finished it, wow!!
it took a lot of talking and the usual "hey, stop playing with that, and pay attention"
Now we have to find a subject for his current event report, due on Monday.
So tomorrow I get a newspaper and Tycho finds a article that interest him, we discuss it and then he has to write about it.
The piece has to be that long that if you give the report in front of the classroom it has to be about two to three minutes.
and believe me that is a lot of writing for an eight year old.

On a different note, I went to the hairdresser this morning and got a fancy (a lot shorter) haircut, and a very cool color.
Uhm, that is two colors, looks cool to me, next time I want three colors!!
Tomorrow pictures again, I promise.

Creepy crawlers
I took these pictures in the spring, with my lensbaby and the macro on it.
I am reading the 52 projects book, so much fun, makes me really think about things

So the book made me think of these pictures, I just love the colors and the amazement of coming up close with that tiny spider and an ant.
The book gives you all kind of projects to do, and you can give them your own spin to.
Can't wait to work on it some more tomorrow.
Anyway, it was bookfair at school today, it was so busy during lunch, that the line was to long to get everybody into the classroom on time. Some kids have to come back tomorrow to get their books.
We all love books, and T reads a lot, just like me when I was a kid, before falling asleep at night I had to read.
Sometimes I fell asleep while reading, sending me to my room as form of punishment was never a good option, I did not mind at all.
My sister was the opposite, she did not like it at all being send to her room.
Ha, thinking of my childhood brings back memories.
Going to do something crafty tonight, have to make my chirstmas cards before I run out of time.

Monday, October 23, 2006

Love the fall colors in our backyard, only downside is, we have to rake the leaves!!

Brusselsprouts, a vegetable

We had brusselsprouts for dinner, that went well (not!!) I love them and when I did my groceries this morning they where calling my name from the fresh vegetable's section. Not a good idea. All the comments that where said during dinner, not a good idea to repeat them here, but it all came down to this, don't ever cook that again! Okay, I just wait until I visit my parents again and add those to the "away from home" menu. Together with Sauerkraut (yum!) and beets (cold with a diced onion) . So far my Monday, now to figure out what to put on the menu for tomorrow!!!

My little man swinging.
