Happy Halloween

There was lots of candy, to much if you ask me.............
Of course decorations, we did not go all out like some in the neighborhood. There was a real Haunted house and they had a party for the kids, T came home with a ghost flashlight and stories from the people who were fire "spitting" outside the house.

And of course there was our scary man himself, there was no name to his costume it was just "scary".
Every Halloween I have to think back at the first time T really knew that he had to say "Trick or Treat" in order to get candy. He was soooooo cute in his Fire fighter costume, made by me with buttons from my dads uniform and his patches on the sleeves. Of course I still have it, this is going to be a family heirloom.
He did not master the difference between the Dutch and English back then. Now he is correcting us on our words and pronunciation. He would just go and ring a doorbell and shout out "Dikke tiet" not knowing what the translation is in Dutch, it just sounds the same as Trick or treat.
But for those not knowing what the translation is, I will give you some time to sit down and swallow any fluids before you read on just in case. So your computer screen stays dry.
"Dikke tiet" means "big boobs". Luckily nobody in our neighborhood back then spoke Dutch!!
As for the latest news on the earthquake, it was a little more that a shake, check out these pictures

Earthquake

We had an Earthquake tonight, this was T's first quake that he really felt freaky about. It lasted about 20 seconds and it was a 5.6 on the Richter scale. I was just filling the dishwasher and then it began. We were ready to take cover when it all was over. No damage here but we were not close to the center, that was in Alum Rock in San Jose.
We turned on the TV and watched the news for a while.
Now we know where everybody will talk about at work and school.

The reading in the Classroom went really well last Friday. The class I was assigned to had a very good giggle out of the Dutch version of "Fox on Socks". What inspired me to design a knitting pattern in Dr. Sues color socks.
But first I am working on the Northern lights Tam and on the other Veronik sock.

Reading

Tomorrow I have to read this book to some classes at my work. The fun part, I am going to read both the English and the Dutch version.
Knowing how the kids react when they hear a different language this is going to be fun. And the Dr. Seuss books are my favorite books of all times.
Luckily I do not have to dress up like a book character like all the teachers do. I just go in and read the book. But I am taking my camera to work, and snap some pictures. What a fun day for the kids, hey I am even looking forward to it!
I am amazed at all the things they learn at school, it is so different from when I grew up. I loved school as a kid, but I would have liked it even more with all those extra things they learn now.
T is learning all about rocks and minerals, is learning to program on the computer in the Phyton language and writes the most funny and amazing stories. They have to read books of every genre, even the classics. And Mr smarty pants is even learning J and me a thing or two. That there are three different kinds of rock, Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic.
Or maybe I did learn that some time but forgot about it, that happens when you are old!

Sunday knitting

Started a new pair of socks, the pattern is really easy so I can take it everywhere. And after we took a stroll downtown we drank some coffee (me), chocolate (J) and a smoothie (T) I enjoyed sitting in the sun and knit some on my socks. Of course the boys had to ask if it was really necessary to knit while they sat with me. Or according to T it is "really embarrassing MOM"!
Well, I do not care I like knitting. Over the weekend I also made these two bags, I love the pink one, it might be my new "tote-my-knitting-around-in" bag.

Tomorrow it is back to work, another week at the office. I like it, after ten years of staying at home, now I go to work and do something totally different than I have ever done. Who would have thought that I would end up at an elementary school as a workplace? Best thing, I have the same schedule as my son.

berries

There is a little park in Palo Alto, in that park stands a little gazebo overgrown with the most extraordinary plant I have ever seen. I mean do you have ever seen berries from this color??
from pale pink to a pale blue to a very vibrant hot pink to purple and blue. Just amazing. I want to know what kind of climbing plant this is. Or better said, I want one for my garden!!!!!

We met up with friends and took a stroll down to this little park, it is wonderful and full of all kinds of flowers. Even the weather was working with us and was so nice today.
I started another pair of socks today, the mittens are almost done, and of course a girl has to start a new project. And I am also back to sewing purses. Before you know it, it is Christmas and presents are to be made.

Sunday

It is weekend and before you know it, it is Monday again and work awaits. Yesterday I did groceries, colored my hair and at around two I went over to my friends house for some serious knitting time. We sat at the table with lots of other knitting friends and talked, ate some very good food, and of course knitted. And yes, I made new friends, who lucky for me are just as "normal" as I am. When I came home around eight thirty I finished one of my fingerless gloves, and started the other one!

Today we spend time together, T and I played with the X-box. To be able to walk a figure around is not easy believe me. And then there are vehicles to drive and enemies to shoot, things to build and coins to collect (Lego star wars game) And if you press the Y button you can change characters. This last thing is very confusing if you do not know what you are doing and when you finally figured out how to walk in a certain direction, jump and shoot you press the wrong button and poof, you are somebody else. Very confusing for this mom. Then I have to asked my son what to do. A conversation that goes like this:

Me: I can't walk anymore
T: oh, you pressed Y
Me: and what is Y for?
T: you move close to somebody and then you change character
Me: why would I do that?
T: to have better weapons
Me: oh...........
T: Moooooooooooooooooom pay attention, they are killing you.

Next I watched him make dizzying roller coasters on something he downloaded on the X-box it is one of those demo games. Fun, I love roller coasters especially when you can watch your son make the most horrific loops and turns. The game even gives you a "puke" rate. Nice!

Leentje

OK, some people (I will not mention names!!!) proved my theory that, yes, we all make mistakes my singing songs. We some times hear words wrong and make up our own.
Like the farting moon from one of my previous posts. I always learned that Leentje learned to walk in the song, not Liesje. I am positive though that said Liesje learned to walk too, at any given time. But not with this song!!
And here is the proof, I had to dig deep to find my book "Liedjes van Vroeger". Any way, it does not really make any difference who learned to walk, in the end they walked home!!

koenopoly

T made his own game today, he loves to play Monopoly so he made up his own version. Of course he had to have a nice box. He rummaged around in my office closed and decided that a box from an album was perfect, and of course I gave it to him. Who am I to shut his creativity down by not giving him the box (a really nice one, of course the boy has good taste he is my son!) He made his own game board, and came up with some really nice places to "land". I became the proud owner of planet earth, after my game piece (Lego) landed on it. There was no rent to pay when my opponents "landed" on it, they had to pay a hundred dollar for "each thing". Nobody landed on earth during our game so I still have to find out what the thing is.
Of course we had to pay "Takses" and if you have the luck to get a chance card, there is the " Free Hotel happy day" card, or the "If you have Halo, you can blow up some properties" card.
I am in for a second session later tonight, time choice by the maker right around bedtime (of course). We love to play "Koenopoly" if only the rules did not change by the minute and in one certain persons interest.
And for the Dutch songs, yesterday we practiced
Leentje leerde Lotje lopen
langs de lange Linde laan
it is going very well and he is very good at the pronunciation too. He wants to recite it in the classroom next week. I wish I could be a fly on the wall that day.

Anthem

Every once in a while T asks if I can learn him a Dutch song. And of course I am happy to do so, not only do I think it is good for him to know somethings from my roots, but also it is soooooooo cute to hear him speak Dutch with a heavy American accent. He interprets some words wrong, and that is something we all do every once in a while. I can still hear my little sister singing the "Heidi" song. It was totally funny and I still have to giggle if I think of it. She made poor Heidi the little "prupser" of the "welle" instead of singing "kleines madched of die berge". But my son tops it all with the Dutch national anthem that I tried to learn him tonight.

Instead of singing "Wilhelmus van Nassau, ben ik van Duitschen bloed" (Wilhelmus van Nassau am I from german blood) he puts poor Wilhelmus underneath the shower. The next line "Mijn vaderlands getrouwe blijf ik tot in den dood" ( I will be faithfull to my fatherland until my death)
He sings "mijn vader maakt gebouwen" ( My dad makes buildings).
We also tried some "sinterklaas" songs before. "Zie de maan schijnt door de bomen" became Zie de maan schijt door de bomen". Translated it went from "see the moon shine through the branches." into "See the moon fart through branches".

Now I have to think of a different song to teach him, one that can have more decent mistakes in it. I was thinking "Ik zag twee beren broodjes smeren" ( I saw to bears make a sandwich).

Quiet

It is quiet in the house, very quiet. My sister and her little family have gone home. No more "Ata" that greets me at the door when I come home in the afternoon. I really enjoyed having my little nephew in the house for a couple of weeks. He is such a little heart breaker! And the last week T and K developed a game that they both loved. T would pick little K up. Of course the way nine year old boys pick up one year old boys. Underneath their armpits and then waddle over to the bedroom.
Next he would put K up on the bed and the fun began. They would just crawl around pull each others feet and legs and giggle.
One of the nights I managed to snap a few pictures while I was checking my mail, my camera was sitting right next to me on my desk and I could not refuse. So here they are, my two little men, playing on the bed just having fun together.
Today my office came back together so I can work on all the things to be done for the boutiques.
The card mill needs to be filled and purses to be made.
Busy season starts, and I am way behind with everything.

I do have no comment on this one!!
